LITTLE Poems
These started as a series of instant messages to my wife when I was working the graveyard shift at a TV station and steamrolled into a strange little collection. They are inspired, I imagine, by the Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, and Edward Gorey poems I read as a child. Assembled here are a few of my favorites. I plan to illustrate them all at some point, but time is short and progress is slow.
Sally had an octopus.
It ran a marathon,
but was disqualified for cheating -
runners can't have eight shoes on.
Theodore wrote tiny poems.
He sent them to his wife.
His wife just sighed
and rolled her eyes
and prayed he get a life.
Quentin always loved to cook.
His specialty was pasta.
When asked about preferred amounts
he always answered, "Lotsa!"
Little Lucy loved to luge.
She moved like Lycra lightning.
She faced down steep and icy tubes
the bravest men found frightening.
Simon Selleck summoned spirits
Hand in hand with Suzy.
Though the ghosts were cordial guests,
the travel made them woozy.
Tina Simpson loved a fish.
It wasn't meant to be,
for Tina knew her fins and gills
were not reality.
Barry built a tiny ship
to sail across the bath.
A bar of soap turned iceberg
proved too difficult to pass.
Maria rode an elephant
from India to Spain.
In Switzerland they paused to snack
on chocolate parfait.
Little Nissa loves to jump
in puddles when it rains.
She dances in galoshes
making noises like a train.
Julie loved to parasail
above the ocean blue.
she once dipped too low
as a fish leaped below.
Now Julie has no shoes.
Henry Bligh wore a big bow tie,
a jacket, and a cap.
His big sister Ruth
thought she knew the truth
and told him he looked like a sap.
Henry just laughed, tipped the brim of his cap,
and began to gently scold her:
"I'll take no style advice
from a girl who derives
who she is from what magazines told her."
Kara believed in UFOs
and longed to find the proof.
She became quite obsessed
and now rarely gets dressed,
spending all of her time on the roof.
Joseph discovered while blowing his nose
he was able to sneeze in tune.
He ran 'round the den
snorting pepper, and then
performed concerts the whole afternoon.
Jenny sped her mini bike
in circles 'round the dog,
who slept, unaffected,
as the cat erected
a fortress of branches and logs.
